Re: Ringlink Web Ring Directory??

Should the default Description (max 150 characters) be increased to 250?
>>>I recommend yes. 150 is TEENY TINY. For webrings I'm hosting on MY
installation of Ringlink I'm considering upping the limit to 400 characters.
I wouldn't recommend that for the directory necessarily, but I'd increase it
beyond 150. - James<<<
I agree. It should be at least 250. - Debby

Should the choice of category in which the ring is to be placed in be
selected at the Ringlink System 'Add new ring' page by the Ringmaster, or be
decided at the 'Ringlink Web Ring Directory' by the 'Directory Manager'
(Debby T)?
>>>I recommend BOTH. That is, the category selected by the Ringmaster should
be a "suggestion". The Directory should have final decision. This
accomplishes two things. It solves the category spamming problem that the
Yahoo! WebRing directory has and it also accomodates the transition period.
During the transition period (until the Ringlink system handles this
semi-automatically), much of the info will be manual and the directory will
be "assigning" categories anyway. - James <<<
Again I agree. It would be helpful to Directory Admin Folks if the RM
gave a hint as to what category *they* think their ring belongs in.
Maybe in adding a top level category choice of *other or not listed above*
in the choices for categories at the Ringlink System *Add New Ring Page*
would assist in defining and refining the categories in the directory.
I don't know anything about programming so I don't have any idea how this
would be incorporated into the RL Program. I would question as to how this
selection of categories at the *Add New Ring* page of a RL Ring System would
updated to keep current with the Ring Directory? When adding a new ring to
a RL system is the RM asked for Key Words to help defining their ring? If
the Key Words could be sent with the ring description it would help in
determining ring placement. -Debby T
2) If a web ring was found not to be valid or was broken in the directory,
would both the
Ringlink Directory Manager and the Ringlink System's Manager whose system
was
hosting that web ring be notified?
>>>Yes. James <<<
I have not had a lot of time to play with the admin portion of the demo
program. But at this time it does not seem to be set up to handle contact
info for the Ring System Managers. I don't know how difficult it would to
set up extra fields in the submit ring form on the directory home page or
modify the program to handle Ring System data.
Also an e-mail address for RSMs was not listed in the proposed info that the
Ringlink program would be sending to the directory. There was a
recommendation to include the system home page location. At the time I felt
that Ring System Data was not necessary for the *Ring Directory*. There is
a directory in place for the RL Systems. This is a directory for the rings.
But then again I may be missing something. - Debby T.
