Re: Universal ring directory?

>>>>There is one disadvantage with self-hosted ring systems, like
Ringlink: There are no large ring directories associated with
them. For that reason, some of the Ringlink developers have
started a project aiming to establish a directory service for
Ringlink rings.<<<<
Yep -- Can't wait until we can get it off the ground.
>>>The latest development with WebRing made me ask myself:
Wouldn't it be a good idea to approach the new owner/developer
of WebRing and suggest that they open the WebRing directory for
other rings than those run through the WebRing server? If they
did, ringmasters of e.g. Ringlink rings would be able to
register their rings in the WebRing directory. IMO it would
benefit both the Ringlink rings and WebRing.
What do you think?<<<
I had almost the same idea -- but backwards -- as always. :o) I was hoping
that once we get the Ringlink Ring Directory system off the ground we could
open it to all independent ring systems. I know that I saw at least 2 other
systems like Ringlink at SF. I wanted to take this in little steps ;) If
that worked then why not take it one huge step further -- open it to any
ring system. But I did not know how it could be efficiently monitored or
financed/supported. I have no idea what it would cost to get a domain name
and enough server space to host such a thing.
Maybe your idea is better -- I just though an independent service would be
better. We don't even know how this new owner at RW is planning on covering
the cost of running the new/old WebRing service.
