Re: Introduction

Hi Gang:
It looks like that at 69, I'm the grandaddy of the group. I have two
quotation websites. The one that is listed as a member of Quotation Ring is
my "Thought for Today: Ideas That Expand Your Mind." That site offers a
quote each day which, we hope, will stretch the mind, and give a person
something to mull over. Since, in my opinion, there are not really that
many quotes that fit that category, my list is limited to 365 (+ for
holidays) quotes, served up one per day, and repeated each year. It is
located at:
        http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/5192/td.htm
It also can serve as a start-up page (with basic links), and is so used by a
small handful of people in addition to my #1 son, Bobby. So far, no
complaints about the yearly repeat.
My main quotation site is actually not a member of the quotation ring! It
is "Thomas Jefferson on Politics & Government," whose URL is in my sig. In
one sense, that website no longer belongs to me, because the University of
Virginia has agreed to make it a permanent part of their Electronic Text
Center, hence I did not feel at liberty to make it a member of the ring.
And, in fact, it is a bit more than just a list of quotations, since the
quotes are organized in such a fashion as to present an outline of the
complete political philosophy of Thomas Jefferson.
Interestingly enough, I also am interested in music, like so many others who
are members of this ring. In fact, my undergraduate degree was in music.
And being a great lover of theories and speculation, that leads me to wonder
about the connection between music and collectors of quotations. Aha! This
is it! No one can fully appreciate classical music unless they are able to
identify thematic material and trace, with their ears, its uses and
permutations in the course of a musical composition. Therefore, such
persons are trained to look at compositions and extract the essential
themes, which is what a person does when reading a book and selecting
quotations therefrom. In other words, a list of quotations is the literary
equivalent of a book of musical themes: the essential idea around which a
whole composition may be written. And a person skilled in detecting musical
themes is naturally inclined and mentally equipped to select literary
quotations. QED ;-)
