Much older than that, I am fairly sure it is Roman in origin, and quoted/used by later military types. I believe this is widely attributed to George S. Patton, Jr. I have always heard it as "A gallon of sweat in training will save a pint of blood in battle." but I am fuzzy on the wording. (In addition, Tom Clancy in his latest book _The Bear and the Dragon_ makes a similar comment.) It is certainly possible however that the thought predates Patton.
