Help on Lafayette Quote

I have asked by Mr. Glenn P. Goffin to make a post
to alt.quotations.
He is seeking a good citation for a quote
attributed to Lafayette:
"If the liberties of the American people are ever
destroyed, they will
fall by the hands of the Catholic clergy."
It does appear to be fairly widely attributed to
Lafayette, usually
with the date 1789, but no further citation
information. Sometimes the
quote deletes the word "Catholic"
Mr. Goffin apparently believes this is a
misattribution.
Any help appreciated.
